Mining

Porcupine Opportunities Program (POP) has provided products to support mining exploration for close to 50 years. Products include core boxes, lids, racks, marker blocks and stakes. Introduced to the agency in the early 1970s as a vocational opportunity, construction of the boxes has grown to become an integral part of the work and life skills programming at the agency. In addition to providing participants with purpose and structure, the revenue from core box production has helped facilitate the wide range of residential, and vocational services that POP is able to offer its participants.

Core Boxes

POP producers the common sizes of boxes (NQ, HQ, and PQ) using kiln-dried spruce plywood and dimensional lumber, with staples used for assembly. The agency currently produces over 40,000 boxes per year. It typically keeps an inventory of these more common box sizes on hand.

The agency will also produce custom boxes. Please call for more information and pricing on custom sizing or for current pricing on the items listed below.

• NQ – Holds 15 feet of 1⅞ inch core (64 inches long × 9½ inches wide)
• HQ – Holds 10 feet of 2½ inch core (64 inches long × 8 inches wide)
• PQ – Holds 5 feet of 3½ inch core (64 inches long × 5¼ inches wide)

Core Marker Blocks

1½ inch × 1½ inch × 2 inch (242 marker blocks per bag)

Core Racks

Standard racks each hold 1500 feet of core.

Stakes

• Garden Stakes – ¾ inch x 2 inch × 2 feet long (50 per bundle)
• Survey Stakes – ¾ inch × 2 inch × 4 feet long (50 per bundle)
• Construction Stakes – 1.5 inch × 1.5 inch × 4 feet (25 per bundle)
• Concrete Stakes – 2.5 inch × 1.5 inch × 4 feet (25 per bundle)

Dunnage

In 2018, POP began producing dunnage for the lumber industry as another component of its vocational program. The agency is set up to produce dunnage products from raw material or from pre-cut lumber.

Gift Store and Laundromat

A new gift store, named “Bits n’ Pieces”, was opened in August 2019. The store, which is a component of POP’s supported employment program, features hand-crafted products consigned by local and regional artisans and crafters. It also features a wide variety of items produced as part of the agency’s vocational programs. The store features over 40 consigners at any given time, marketing a wide variety of products.

Please note that most of the consigned products are “one of a kind” and made especially for sale within our gift store. Our laundromat contains two regular washing machines, three double-load machines, and one triple-load machine, along with four dryers. We offer fluff and fold service as well as self-service washing!
